Do I Have a Dental Emergency?
What Dental Problems Need Emergency Care?
Severe Tooth Pain
A toothache that throbs, wakes you at night or flares with hot and cold is often a sign of deep decay or an inflamed nerve. Getting it checked quickly gives you more treatment choices and may help save the tooth.
Facial or Gum Swelling
A puffy gum or swollen cheek usually points to infection, sometimes an abscess at the root of a tooth. Infections like these do not go away on their own, and they can spread, so they need a prompt look.
Broken or Cracked Tooth
Whether you bit down on something hard or took a tumble, a broken tooth can leave sharp edges and exposed nerve layers. The sooner it is repaired, the more natural tooth we can usually protect.
Knocked-Out Tooth
A knocked-out adult tooth is a true race against the clock. Reaching us within about an hour improves the odds that the tooth can be placed back and settled in.
Lost Filling or Crown
When a filling or crown comes loose, the tooth underneath is more fragile and often sensitive. It can usually wait a day or two, but do not leave it for weeks.
Dental Trauma
Kids’ sports, playground falls and fender benders can all injure teeth, even when nothing looks broken. A quick exam and X-rays help us spot loosened teeth or cracked roots early.
Before You Reach Us
What to Do During a Dental Emergency
Knocked-Out Tooth
Pick the tooth up by the white top part and avoid touching the root. If it has dirt on it, give it a quick rinse in milk or water, but do not scrub. Gently press it back into its socket if you can and bite softly on a clean cloth. If it will not go back, drop it into a little milk and phone our office without delay. For children, do not try to replant a baby tooth.
Broken Tooth
Save any pieces you can find and rinse your mouth gently with warm water. An ice pack wrapped in a cloth and held to your cheek can calm swelling. Sharp edges can be covered with orthodontic wax or sugarless gum until your visit. Favour the other side when eating, and give us a call.
Facial Swelling
Hold a wrapped ice pack against your cheek for about 15 minutes at a time, and skip the heating pad. Call our office as soon as you notice swelling.
Lost Filling or Crown
Keep the crown in a clean container and bring it with you. Stick to soft foods on the other side of your mouth. Pharmacy dental cement can cover the area for a short time, but please do not use any kind of glue. Plan to see us in the next day or two.
Severe Toothache
Swish with warm salt water, then floss carefully in case something is wedged between your teeth. An over-the-counter pain reliever, taken as the package directs, plus an ice pack on your cheek may take the edge off. Never tuck a pill beside the sore tooth, since it can burn your gum. Then phone us to track down the cause.
- Medical emergency warning: Swelling that creeps toward your eye or down your neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a fever means you should call 911 or head straight to a hospital emergency department.

Why Salvador
Why Choose Salvador Family Dentistry for Emergency Care?
Same-Day Appointments
We set aside time for urgent visits so a dental emergency does not have to wait. When you call, we offer the earliest opening we have, often the same day.
Two Dentists You Can Count On
Dr. Jack Salvador has cared for Maple families since 1987, and his son, Dr. Luca Salvador, practices alongside him. Both are general dentists, and having two of them on the schedule gives us more room to fit in urgent visits.
Help Over the Phone
When you call, we ask about your symptoms so we can judge how quickly you need to be seen and walk you through what to do until you arrive.
3D Imaging When It Matters
Digital X-rays and 3D CBCT imaging help us find hidden cracks, infections and injuries that are hard to see with the eye alone, so we can treat the real cause.
New Patients Welcome
You do not need to be a patient of ours, and you do not need a referral. Just call, and we will set up your file when you come in.

Emergency Treatments
Emergency Dental Treatments We Provide
All emergency care at Salvador Family Dentistry is provided by general dentists.
First visit
Pain Relief and Stabilization
Our first priority at any emergency visit is easing your pain and stopping the problem from getting worse. That might mean calming an inflamed tooth, protecting a broken edge or managing an infection, so you leave more comfortable with a clear plan for what comes next.
Save the tooth
Root Canal Treatment
When infection or inflammation reaches the nerve inside a tooth, root canal treatment removes it and seals the tooth. It is often what finally settles a severe toothache, and it may let you keep your natural tooth. Most treated teeth need extra protection afterward.
For kids
Emergency Care for Children
Kids chip teeth on playgrounds, take falls and get sudden toothaches, too. We see children for dental emergencies, check baby and adult teeth for hidden damage, and explain what to watch for at home. A calm, friendly visit helps little ones feel safe.
Restore the tooth
Once an emergency is stabilized, a chipped or broken front tooth may need a longer-term repair. For suitable cases, dental veneers can restore the tooth’s shape and appearance. Your dentist will check the tooth’s health first and explain whether veneers or another option suits you.
Replace the tooth
If a tooth is knocked out and cannot be replanted, or is too damaged to keep, a dental implant may be one way to replace it later. We assess your bone and gum health first and talk through all your options, including timing, before any decisions are made.

Emergency Dental Cost
How Much Does Emergency Dental Care Cost?
Emergency costs vary from person to person and depend on what your dentist finds and what needs to be done. We cannot give an exact price before an exam, but we always share an estimate before any treatment begins, so there are no surprises.
Examination
An emergency visit usually starts with a close look at the problem area, so your dentist can pinpoint what is wrong and decide what to tackle first.
X-Rays and Diagnostics
X-rays show what is happening under the gums and inside the tooth, like infection or a hidden crack. For more complex cases, 3D imaging may be recommended. We only take what is needed.
Complexity and Treatment
Minor repairs cost less than larger treatments like root canals, crowns or extractions. Some emergencies are stabilized first and finished at a second visit, and we explain the cost of each step.
Insurance and Payment Options
We work with most dental insurance providers, and many plans cover part of emergency exams and treatment. Your coverage depends on your plan and annual maximum. Dental treatment in a dentist’s office is generally not covered by OHIP. If you are covered by the Canada Dental Care Plan, ask our team about using it here.

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is a tooth or mouth problem that needs quick care to ease serious pain, treat an infection or save a tooth. Common examples are a severe toothache, a swollen face or gum, a knocked-out tooth and a broken tooth. If you are not sure, call us and we will help you decide.
Can I get a same-day appointment?
Yes, Salvador Family Dentistry offers same-day emergency appointments when available. Call us early in the day and describe what you are feeling. That helps us judge how urgent your situation is and set aside enough time to take care of you properly.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
Hold the tooth by the top, not the root, give it a quick milk rinse if it is dirty, and ease it back into its socket. If it will not go in, store it in milk and phone us immediately. Being seen within roughly an hour gives the tooth a stronger chance.
What should I do if my face is swollen?
Phone our office right away and hold a wrapped ice pack to your cheek. Swelling usually means infection and needs a prompt dental visit. When swelling interferes with breathing, swallowing or vision, or you are running a fever, call 911 or get to a hospital emergency department.
How much does emergency dental treatment cost?
Because every case is different, we can only give a price once your dentist has examined you and reviewed any X-rays. You will get an estimate before anything is done. We work with most insurance providers and can help you understand what your plan covers.
Do you accept new emergency patients?
Yes, new patients are always welcome for emergency care at Salvador Family Dentistry, and no referral is needed. Just call us to book. Bring your insurance card and your current medications list, and we will take care of the rest at the front desk.
What should I do after hours?
If we are closed, please leave a voicemail and our team will call you back as soon as the office opens. For free health advice anytime, you can call Health811 by dialing 811. Call 911 for any breathing or swallowing difficulty or fast-spreading swelling.
Can a hospital fix a dental emergency?
Not usually. Hospital emergency departments can help with severe pain, spreading infection and dangerous swelling, but they generally do not repair or remove teeth. For most toothaches and broken teeth, a dental office is where the actual problem gets treated, so call us first.
